If every possible benefit of the doubt is given to the speakers at Sen. Paul Wellstone’s “memorial service,” it would be that grief overcame them and they didn’t realize what they were doing. Unfortunately, they knew exactly what they were doing when they turned what should have been a beautiful, respectful testimonial to a passionate, devoted public servant into a partisan political spectacle.

It was an appalling scene and an embarrassment for Wellstone when boos were heard coming from the crowd when individuals from other political persuasions entered the hall.

These were people who came to pay their respects to a fallen comrade.

Unfortunately this is an example of what politics has turned into today–overly partisan and intensely personal. The irony is that the Democratic Party prides itself in standing for inclusion and diversity. The evidence, at least on that night, would indicate the opposite.
