I agree with music critic John von Rhein that the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Lyric Opera having no radio broadcasts this season is “shameful,” and that such a “screaming silence” diminishes Chicago’s status as an international cultural presence (“Off the air: Greed has silenced Lyric and CSO,” Arts & Entertainment, Oct. 13). I would take serious and strenuous issue, however, with his assessment that it is greed on the part of our city’s highly skilled and dedicated musicians that is stifling these broadcasts.
The CSO and Lyric Opera are among the finest musical institutions in the world. We need to remember that without the expert men and women who make the music, these cultural icons would cease to be recognized as such.
