Piercing the ear cartilage is much riskier than piercing the ear lobe, the Infectious Disease Society of America reports.
Sure, the risk of infection in piercing body parts we won’t even mention is even greater, but those require special techniques and licenses and all that baggage. But typically, people getting ear cartilage pierced simply go to a mall and get it done with one of those spring-loaded “guns”–which can spray bacteria everywhere.
Here’s the part that made us squirm. The infectious-disease folks say infections “can cause the ear cartilage to erode.” Nasty.
