A program promoting teen safe driving is praising reporters for using the word “crash” instead of “accident” in stories about, well, crashes involving teens.
“As long as parents continue to consider car crashes as a matter of fate, or accept these events as an inevitable part of teen driving, parents will fail to see their role in reducing these events and protecting their children,” said Gary Direnfeld, executive director of the I Promise Program.
Car crashes in which teens are driving often include excessive speed, risk-taking behavior, multiple teen passengers and driving after midnight. Direnfeld said parents can help control these behaviors in their teens.
