Be careful what you say. It could cost you.
Members of the City Council’s Finance Committee on Friday recommended passing an ordinance that will increase fines on a variety of violations. Get caught tossing an F-bomb or using the B-word, and it could cost between $200 and $300, up from $100, according to the new fine schedule.
Chicago police issued 3,000 citations for “indecent act and language” this year, collecting $144,000 in fines. A significant number of those were for swearing, said Budget Director William Abolt.
Other potential fines to be aware of:
– Fees for overgrown weeds were hiked to a minimum of $100 and a maximum of $300, from $50 and $100, respectively.
– Residents who abandon refrigerators where children can access them, and possibly suffocate, face a maximum fine of $200, up from $50.
