The Democrats could not have had better circumstances leading to the election. The economy is in a recession; thousands of jobs have been lost; the Enron, WorldCom, etc., scandals loomed; government funds have gone from a gigantic surplus to billions in deficit.
The impending Iraqi war is approved by the majority of Americans only with United Nations support, yet Democrats surrendered congressional power to wage war for fear of appearing weak.
Democrats voted for the $1.35 trillion tax reduction, in spite of their stand on making Social Security and Medicare solvent.
The irony in the Democrats’ non-agenda agenda is that in their quiescence, they were the party that appeared weak to the American voter. The Republicans know the peaks and valleys of the American psyche and played the Democrats like a violin.
