Bernstein out as DePaul announcer
Controversy swirled Tuesday over DePaul’s decision to go with Ron Gleason as its radio play-by-play voice instead of Dan Bernstein for its games on WSCR-AM 670. Gleason will join analyst Dave Corzine.
Bernstein contends he wasn’t asked to return because of his satirical remarks about the Catholic priest sexual scandal on the daily WSCR show he does with Terry Boers. According to Bernstein, DePaul Athletic Director Jean Lenti Ponsetto asked him to refrain from making jokes on the issue. Bernstein told DePaul he couldn’t comply.
Ponsetto recalls the situation differently. She said DePaul went with Gleason because he is a better fit.
IRSAY DRUG ABUSE: Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay has a history of prescription drug abuse that includes at least three overdoses and treatment at clinics, television station WTHR reported Tuesday. The station said Irsay has abused prescription painkillers since at least 1995. The station also reported that Irsay was being investigated for prescription drug fraud. The investigations could not be confirmed late Tuesday, and Irsay has not been charged with any crimes.
LOWE STEPS DOWN: Sidney Lowe resigned as coach of the Memphis Grizzlies on Tuesday and was replaced by former NBA coach of the year Hubie Brown. The 69-year-old Brown takes over the only winless team in the league. Lowe was in his third season with the Grizzlies, who have never had a winning season since the team began playing in 1995.
TALL ORDER: Manute Bol has traded in his basketball sneakers and boxing trunks and now is in search for a pair of skates. The 7-foot-7 Bol agreed to terms Tuesday with the Indianapolis Ice of the Central Hockey League. “We’re in the business of selling tickets,” Ice GM Larry Linde said. But he added, “We’re not going to throw him out there if he’s going to kill himself.”
BIG GAME: Backup QB Stan Hill threw four touchdown passes and scored on a 1-yard run with 5 seconds left to lift Marshall over Miami of Ohio 36-34 Tuesday. Afterward, Miami of Ohio defensive coordinator John Wauford was arrested for allegedly shoving a Marshall fan. The fan hit his head on the turf and was taken to a hospital with a concussion, state police in Huntington, W. Va. said.
AND FINALLY: Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario retired from tennis Tuesday. Jose Maria Olazabal is still playing golf.
