I have a simple suggestion for helping voters get rid of unqualified judges on judicial retention ballots: The judges should be listed in alphabetical order.
I am a careful, meticulous person who is very motivated to get rid of incompetent judges. I brought the Chicago Tribune list of judges deemed unqualified into the voting booth with me, and was very discouraged by the task of wading through page after page of names in random order, double-checking with the Tribune’s alphabetized list. I accidentally voted “no” for one qualified judge and registered an undervote in the ballot checking box, but had no desire to go through the whole process again. I am sure I voted “no” for all the judges on the list, but they all ended up retained anyway.
