This must be a unique time in our nation’s political history. On one hand, we have probably the most right-wing, unilateralist, arrogant and belligerent party to ever be in control of all three branches of our federal government. On the other hand, our other national party is almost a mirage–it has no vision, no causes it will fight for, no message.
As difficult as this would be to accomplish, I wonder if it’s finally time that a real attempt be made to develop a nationally strong third political party, with a definite center-left focus–one that proudly and coherently sets forth its progressive policies and convictions, and has the political backbone to fight for them.
Our country needs the checks and balances provided by a strong “loyal opposition,” which the Democratic Party continues to be incapable of providing.
