This is in response to “Critics fear Singapore using terror war to duck reforms” (News, Nov. 3). Reporter Uli Schmetzer claims that “some people” suspect Singapore has supported the war against terrorism to “stifle the clamor for a more open and democratic society.”

This is absurd.

In December 2001, Singapore arrested a group of Al Qaeda-linked terrorists who were planning attacks in Singapore, including on the U.S. Embassy, U.S. servicemen stationed in Singapore and American businesses. In August of this year, we arrested more terrorists belonging to the same group.

Singapore joined the fight against terrorism and has taken tough action against terrorists because this is the right thing to do.
