In “Patient-record reform pushed; Legal proposals guarantee access” (Metro, Oct. 31), Aurelia Pucinski, director of the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation, expresses “exasperation” that the Cook County state’s attorney’s office and the Illinois attorney general’s office have not taken “a tougher line” against Meyer Medical after it declared bankruptcy, leaving patients without access to their medical records.

The article accurately points out that neither prosecutor’s office has jurisdiction. That jurisdiction and responsibility rests with Pucinski’s agency, which licenses and regulates doctors. We have nothing to do with disciplining doctors when they fail to follow state licensing regulations.
