When I first read the reactions of the three individuals on the subject of war with Iraq (RedEye on the Spot, Nov. 13), I was surprised by the naivete of those interviewed. Apparently so was Jay S., 26, of Bucktown, who wrote in response to their comments. But I’m now even more shocked at his reaction. Thanks to the efforts of many American presidents, the vast majority of American people believe that “war” has to involve mass slaughter of innocent people.
I have no doubt that Saddam Hussein has powerful weapons and intentions to use them, but carpet bombing Iraq is not the answer. Ever heard of “covert military operations?” Unlike Osama bin Laden, we actually know where Saddam is.
Bush doesn’t want you to know this, but Saddam and his key players could be taken out without leveling three-fourths of Baghdad. For a while, I thought that Bush was digging himself into a hole by villifying Saddam and focusing all the energy of this campaign on him. I thought for sure that people would start asking why, if it’s all about Saddam, do we have to declare all-out war on the whole country? It seemed inevitable that the populace would eventually become aware of the real reasons for the war (greed, oil, having the last name Bush). If RedEye readers are at all an accurate cross-section of the country, Bush has nothing to worry about.
