Glue, corrective fluid and cough syrup were once the pre-teen drugs of choice, but now middle school students are swilling something else.
Several Pennsylvania grocers reported a run on pure vanilla extract and found emptied boxes in their store parking lots. Is the town getting an early jump on holiday baking? They figured it a tad suspicious and pulled the product from the shelves, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.
Usually used to flavor cookies and desserts, vanilla extract is at least 35 percent alcohol by volume. One bottle is as potent as a bottle or two of beer, health officials say.
