The British press is raving about Mike Skinner, a.k.a. The Streets. He’s being hailed as the first truly British rapper, one whose Limey-slang lexicon and quirky, self-produced, Brit-garage-styled beats are only generally indebted to American hip-hop. “Original Pirate Material” proves that Skinner is as creative a rhymer as he is a sharp-sensed commentator on his own social milieu, though it’s probably more suited to headphones than dancefloors.
