Cincinnati Reds infielder-outfielder Russell Branyan will need surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder and is expected to be sidelined four months.
Branyan, 26, developed a sore shoulder while playing for Licey in the Dominican League, where he hit .205 in 14 games.
Branyan had career highs in games (134), at-bats (378), runs (50), hits (86), home runs (24), RBIs (56) and strikeouts (151) in 2002 while appearing in 50 games for Cleveland and 84 with Cincinnati.
