Memphis guards Billy Richmond and Clyde Wade were suspended Wednesday for one game for their role in a brawl during a game against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
Richmond and Wade were ejected from Monday’s game, as were teammates Anthony Rice and Almamy Thiero, who came off the bench during the fight.
The fight caused Memphis to change its policy. Players will automatically be suspended for leaving the bench during a fight, athletic director R.C. Johnson said.
Ball State loses star
Forward Theron Smith, who led Ball State to startling victories over Kansas and UCLA last season, will sit out this season due to knee tendinitis. Cardinals coach Tim Buckley said the 6-foot-8-inch senior from Auburndale, Fla., will seek a medical redshirt. Smith led the Mid-American Conference in rebounding (10.9) and was third in scoring (19.6) last season.
2 players dismissed
Michigan junior guard Avery Queen was dismissed from the team for violating unspecified team rules. “We appreciate Avery’s efforts here at the university and wish him and his family well,” coach Tommy Amaker said in a statement. “There will be no further comment on this matter.” Queen played in 57 games and averaged 4.3 points.
La Salle center Chukwunike Okosa was dismissed from the team for unspecified rules violations. The 6-10 senior started all 32 games last season and averaged 11.3 points and 8.2 rebounds.
Milestone win
Miami, Ohio, beat Ohio Dominican 65-39 Wednesday to give coach Charlie Coles his 200th career win. Coles is 200-164 and 108-80 in seven seasons at Miami.
