Don Wycliff criticized the Tribune’s decision to place the “unflattering” thumbs-up photo of President Bush on the front page of the Nov. 14 Tribune (Commentary, Nov. 21). He claims that this amounted to editorializing on Page 1. Quite to the contrary, I applaud the Tribune’s placement of the photo on the front page. The American press’ regular editing-out of less-than-statesmanlike photos of national leaders itself amounts to editorializing on a daily basis.
After spending two months abroad this year, it is very clear that a good part of the world’s population sees our president as less than statesmanlike. It is important for U.S. citizens to see this side of our leadership.
As the U.S. is setting the stage for a war with global repercussions, this is not the time for the American media to pull the wool over the eyes of citizens and edit out any foolish photos or statements by our president.
