Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

In 1930 my sister and I came to this wonderful country.

We spoke no English and moved into a basic immigrant neighborhood–some German, some Italian, a few Polish and a few Jewish people.

We all spoke our native language at home, and my sister and I learned a few words of English from some of the kids playing on the street.

When we started school that fall there were no bilingual teachers for anyone.

We all learned to read, write, add, divide, subtract. I would say within a couple of years all of us spoke English to our parents. I’m proud to say I can read and write; our teachers taught us how.

Something is wrong with our current system and teachers.

If you can’t teach, get out of the classroom.

The money that schools get and waste is awful.
