The Chicago River and its bridges play a big role in the lives and recollections of my family.
Several of the bridges were designed and constructed or restored under the direction of my late father, Loran D. Gayton, when he served as city engineer of Chicago.
In my childhood many of our dinner-table conversations revolved around the river, the tunnel system and the bridges. My brother and I were fascinated by the stories about the river’s and Chicago’s history.
To this day I take a proprietary interest in the river.
