Thanks for your coverage of the fiasco surrounding this year’s Mac race (“Months after Mackinac, storm over skipper brews,” Metro, Nov. 20). I can understand why John Podmajersky filed suit against the Chicago Yacht Club. If after decades of honing my skills I was able to win the Mackinac race and had the honor withheld based on a paperwork snafu, I, too, would fight for my name to be correctly placed in the history books.
I was on a boat in this year’s race and finished close to Podmajersky; I can testify to the excellent performance demonstrated by him and his crew on Illusion. They proved that a bunch of dedicated amateurs could sail one of the smallest boats in the race and beat the big boys at their own game. They deserve the proper recognition.
