It was one of those nights when everything Hoffman Estates wanted, Hoffman Estates got.
The Hawks (6-2, 2-1) shot well from the floor and turned in a smothering defensive effort in toppling cross-town rival Conant 65-53 Friday night in the Mid-Suburban West.
Hoffman used a 10-1 run late in the first quarter–with five points from Bryan Mead and four from Scott Hennig–and a 12-0 run to start the second to overwhelm visiting Conant and build a 33-13 lead with 3 minutes 21 seconds left in the half.
The Hawks consistently broke Conant’s press while their defense held the Cougars (5-2, 1-2) without a second-quarter field goal until 41 seconds remained in the half.
The Hawks shot 60 percent (23-for-38) from the floor through the first three quarters, while Conant connected on just 22 percent (9-for-41). After trailing by as much as 53-32 with 2:17 left in the third, the Cougars got no closer than 10–and that was in the game’s last minute.
Jonny Reibel led the Hawks with 18 points, while Mead and Hennig finished with 16 and 13 points, respectively. Brandon Jung chipped in 10. Keith Peterson led Conant with 12 points, while Gary Wiggins added 11.
