Edward T. Murphy, 75, of Prospect Heights, a former accountant for the City of Chicago, died of congestive heart failure Sunday, Dec. 29, in Holy Family Medical Center, Des Plaines. Raised on Chicago’s South Side, Mr. Murphy graduated from Onarga Military School in Onarga, Ill. He earned an accounting degree from Loyola University, taking night classes while working at Ford Motor Co. during the day. In the early 1960s, Mr. Murphy started work as a certified public accountant in the city’s Department of Streets and Sanitation. “He was always good with numbers and a very detail-oriented man,” said his son, Edward G. Mr. Murphy worked his way up to first deputy commissioner of the department. “He always said, `If you’re going to do a job, do it right,’ ” said daughter Karen Boza. He retired from the city job in 1981 but continued working as a consultant and a tax preparer. For more than 20 years, he was treasurer for Knights of Columbus Council 5025. Survivors also include his wife, Edwardine; three more daughters, Joyce Rahn, Jayne O’Neill and Therese; a brother, William; a sister, Mary; and 13 grandchildren. Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday in Friedrichs Funeral Home, 320 W. Central Rd., Mt. Prospect. Mass will be said at 11 a.m. Friday in St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, 411 N. Wheeling Rd., Prospect Heights.
