After Wednesday afternoon’s final program of the Chicago thoroughbred season at Hawthorne Race Course, local fans will have to wait awhile before they have the opportunity to see another live racing card.
The Chicago circuit harness horsemen’s strike that will begin Wednesday night at Maywood Park has the makings of a prolonged work stoppage because of the impasse over a 2003 contract. In addition to Wednesday’s card at Maywood, the Thursday program at Balmoral Park and the Friday program at Maywood have been canceled by the Johnston family, which operates and co-owns both tracks.
Both tracks will continue conducting full-card simulcasts of out-of-state thoroughbred and harness races.
