Trudging through a Chicago winter, we’re not always able to follow the adage to “keep the wind at our back.” Unfortunately, it’s usually whipping in our faces.

If harsh winds and dry, indoor air have left your face in need of some serious TLC, it’s time for a facial. If you don’t have the time or money for a spa facial, why not try one yourself at home?

“There are things you can do at home to duplicate the effects of a facial that are relaxing, pampering and quite effective,” said Rebecca Sample, a former senior beauty editor at Glamour magazine.

“Wash your face day and night, exfoliate once a week and use a mask every other week,” said Sample, “and your skin is going to be in great shape.”

Skin care tips

Always do a mask on clean skin.

To help your face receive a mask better, steam it first. Fill the sink with very hot water and lean over the sink with a towel over your head to open up your pores.

Use products made for your skin type. Extremely deep cleansing masks are not good for dry skin. If you have oily skin, clay masks work well.

Try homemade remedies. For dry skin, try using honey, avocado and bananas

Oily skin responds well to acidic fruits such as oranges and tomatoes.

“Just grind them up and wash your face with them,” Sample said. After applying the mask, be sure to moisturize and follow your daily skin-care routine.”
