This is regarding David Hubner’s letter to the editor concerning former President Jimmy Carter (“Carter history,” Voice of the people, Jan. 2).
It seems that the statement of a few simple facts is in order.
The Nobel Peace Prize is not awarded to the person who protects Americans from inflation and long gas lines. The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded to people who make tremendous efforts to promote peace throughout the world.
Carter authored peace between Israel and Egypt, which endures to this day.
He has remediated conflict in hot spots all over the world.
When it comes to awarding the Nobel Peace Prize, the gas shortages and interest rates of the 1970s simply are irrelevant.
That’s not “revisionist” history, as Hubner suggests; that’s recognizing the true meaning of public service.
