Regarding the nuclear weapons crisis with North Korea, the president and our foreign policy leaders have enunciated two points clearly: The solution must be diplomatic and the U.S. will not negotiate with North Korea.

F. Scott Fitzgerald regarded this ability to entertain contradictory thoughts as the test of a first-rate mind. Let’s hope Fitzgerald was correct. A less optimistic interpretation comes from George Orwell, who called it “doublespeak.”
