A Wisconsin team once again stole the show at a meet that traditionally features some of Illinois’ finest.

Swimmers from Arrowhead, from north suburban Milwaukee, took firsts in six of 12 events–including a meet record in the 100-yard backstroke–on the way to winning Saturday’s 14-team Evanston Invitational for the second straight year.

The Warhawks, defending Wisconsin state champions, collected 3,094 points to outdistance New Trier (2,958) and Neuqua Valley (2,783).

Evanston sophomore Jacob Johnson was the only Illinois double winner, taking the 100 freestyle in 47.61 seconds and the 200 freestyle in 1:43.83.

Other Illinois winners were New Trier senior Meir Hasbani (200 individual medley, 1:56.90), Neuqua Valley diver Aaron Leech (217.30 points), Palatine sophomore Kyle Sorensen (50 freestyle, 21.94) and Lake Forest’s David Ashley (500 freestyle, 4:46.46).

Arrowhead swept all three relays and sophomore Chris Perry set a meet-record backstroke time of 51.87.

New Trier got seconds from junior Drew Woodbury (50 freestyle) and Eric Boardwell (500 freestyle).

“I was real excited about the way we swam,” said Trevians coach Mark Onstott. “We had a dual meet [Friday against Glenbrook South] and did not look good. But we came in and worked out this morning and looked great today.”

Fremd and junior all-arounder Katie Burke walked away with top honors at the 12th annual Lincoln-Way invitatational for the third straight year.

The Vikings’ 146.5 score gave them the meet title for the ninth time. Lyons took second place with 139.75, edging Sandburg’s 139.45 total.

“We were surprised to end up in second place, considering the level of competition,” Lyons coach Garen Lazier said.

Fremd won the meet despite having to count three falls on the balance beam. Considering that, the team’s score is “respectable,” said Vikings coach Larry Petrillo.

Burke won the all-around for the third straight year, to go with individual titles for bars, balance beam and floor exercise. Burke, the defending state all-around champion, finished second on vault with a 9.8 as Sandburg senior April Hurt won the event with a record 9.85.

Former Farragut point guard Marcetteaus McGee recently enrolled at Illinois-Chicago.

Farragut coach William Nelson said McGee had been offered a scholarship and was likely to accept.

McGee would be eligible to play next season with the Flames if he can overcome some legal obstacles.

The 6-foot-1-inch point guard was signed by the University of Wisconsin last spring. He was released from his scholarship upon his request after being charged with second-degree sexual assault and intimidation of a victim stemming from an incident July 25 in an apartment building in Madison, Wis.

McGee never enrolled for classes at Wisconsin and moved back to Chicago in August. A not-guilty plea was entered on his behalf at a September hearing, and the case is pending.
