For the members of 3 Doors Down, topping the ubiquitous hit “Kryptonite” isn’t a realistic goal.
The song, from the band’s multimillion-selling debut album “The Better Life,” spent more than 10 weeks atop several rock-format charts and was nominated for a slew of industry awards, including a Grammy.
” ‘Kryptonite’ is a once-in-a-lifetime track,” said guitarist Chris Henderson. But that realization hasn’t caused 3 Doors Down to reserve space in One-Hit-Wonderland just yet.
“Away From the Sun,” released in November, sporting the still-climbing lead single “When I’m Gone,” is turning out to be a heck of an encore.
The song is currently No. 5 on Billboard’s Modern Rock Tracks chart and holding down the 36th slot on the Hot 100 chart, while the album is No. 35 on The Billboard 200 chart.
Besides “Kryptonite” and “When I’m Gone,” 3 Doors Down has built up a resume of modern rock hits, including “Loser” and “Duck and Run” from “The Better Life” and “Be Like That” from the “American Pie 2” soundtrack. The band started as a trio in 1995 in the small town of Escatawpa, Miss., playing Metallica and Bush covers along with a few originals.
But after a Biloxi, Miss., radio station broke “Kryptonite” in 2000, the group has never looked back.
3 Doors Down makes no apologies for its Southern roots, and to emphasize that it is an American rock band, the group went on a patriotic venture to Saudi Arabia last fall to perform for U.S. military troops.
