As expected, Molly Ivins’ response to George Bush’s proposed tax cuts was her predictably mean-spirited diatribe against those evil rich people who will be able to keep more of the money that they earn. Hers and the arguments of other liberals are rooted in class envy and a desire to punish those among us who have succeeded through education and hard work, and by taking the risks necessary to succeed.
More troubling than that, though, is her failure to see the bigger picture. The liberals make it very clear from their “soak the rich” rhetoric that they are of the opinion that the money we earn belongs first and foremost to the government, and that the government has first claim to our earnings. All this talk about what should be taxed, and to what extent, ignores the fact that our government, in violation of the Constitution, systematically confiscates and redistributes the income of its citizens. In any other country, this would be called socialism.
