Bears safety Damon Moore was arrested Jan. 4 on charges of drunken driving, a situation that could lead ultimately to his departure from the Bears if he is found guilty.

Moore was expected to challenge for a starting safety position next training camp. But a guilty judgment, coupled with a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy in 2002, may be more than the Bears will stand.

General manager Jerry Angelo declined to discuss details of the case except to say he was “extremely disappointed” after giving Moore a second chance in an effort to come back from a knee injury Moore sustained playing for Philadelphia in the 2001 NFC title game.

A police report of the incident, which occurred in Columbus, Ohio, alleges Moore drove the wrong way on a ramp connecting Interstate Highway 270 to I-670 and caused an accident in which he was not harmed.
