My 5-year-old son asked me an interesting question: “Why can’t I have privacy in the boys’ bathroom at school?”
Since I am a single mother and my son has visited many women’s public restrooms with me when we are out, all of which have doors on the stalls, he was confused as to why the men’s/boys’ restrooms do not have the same regard for privacy. What a great question. Our sons have just as much right to their privacy as our daughters. We spend so much time teaching our children the importance of privacy and ways to protect themselves from sexual assault, and then we tell our boys that it’s acceptable behavior to urinate in front of other boys and men.
I’m sure the majority of people, male or female, if given a choice, would prefer having stall doors in public restrooms, especially at our schools. Our boys deserve the same respect for their privacy as our girls. Living in a civilized society, this inappropriate behavior pattern should no longer be acceptable.
