This is in response to “The politics of `Choose Life’ license plates” (Voice of the people, Jan. 7), by Jim Finnegan, president of Choose Life Inc. For an organization to claim to be only about supporting adoption and disclaiming any connection whatsoever with abortion, and yet to call itself Choose Life Inc., I really do have to protest.
The word “choose” implies a choice. To support adoption or not to support adoption? That is not the choice that is implied at all. The choice implied is the one between continuing a pregnancy or aborting the fetus.
The Choose Life Inc. people have certainly discovered the power in the word “choose,” as in “a woman’s right to choose.” They have co-opted that word to their advantage. That is their right.
But to pretend that it doesn’t refer in any way to the debate on abortion is disingenuous or downright deceptive. If they are concerned only with adoption, then why not call themselves Support Adoption Inc. or Adoption Inc.?
I support adoption–there are thousands of unwanted kids out there needing and wanting to be adopted. I certainly won’t support an organization pretending to support adoption when its name is advocating only one of the choices in a woman’s right to choose.
