This is in reply to Rick Morrissey’s Jan. 8 column, “Mighty Ryno strikes out; 2nd basemen not 1st rate,” about whether Ryne Sandberg deserves to go to the Hall of Fame. It is because of people like Morrissey that one of the greatest second basemen of all time is not writing his induction speech right now.

His argument that second basemen should be compared to other position players is absurd. Do you think Babe Ruth could have played second base? It takes a different kind of athlete to play a middle infield position than it does to play a corner or outfield position. They must have a low center of gravity and be very quick, and rarely have we seen those attributes combined with the power that Sandberg had.
