Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

I liked what Bob Verdi had to say about Shaquille O’Neal’s stupid comments regarding Yao Ming (Tribune, Jan. 17). I think that Shaq was out of line, but I also feel Yao handled the situation better than any other minority would have.

If the roles had been reversed, if Yao or a “white” person had said something about an African-American, I think we would have a national news story on a racist player in the NBA. This shows how much we overreact to these situations and how reverse racism is so socially acceptable.

I’m glad Yao Ming showed that even at a young age he is more mature than Shaquille O’Neal will ever be. I am a fan of Shaq, and I usually find his comments funny. I just think that if things had been the other way around we would be talking about this a lot more then we are right now.
