Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X never met face to face, but an educational theater group from Washington is going back in time to bring them together on a stage at Harper College in Palatine.

To commemorate Black History Month, the Pin Points Theatre group will perform a one-act play about a fictional meeting between the two civil rights leaders, who were slain three years apart.

Called “The Meeting,” the 75-minute play poses the hypothetical question of what might have taken place had the two met. The play embodies the lives and philosophies of both men during that time period, said Cyrus Johnson, Harper coordinator of student activities.

“They discuss their philosophies,” Johnson said. King “talks about the philosophy of non-violence and [Malcolm X] of the philosophy of any means necessary. They realize that both philosophies are right to a certain point. They come to an agreement to disagree.”

In the performance Malcolm X invites King to a Harlem hotel room where he is living because his home has been firebombed.

General admission tickets are $7; Harper College student tickets are $5. Tickets are still available for the performance at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Business and Social Science Center Theatre, J 143. For more information, call 847-925-6100.
