Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

When you can’t find your shoes under the pile on the closet floor, it’s time to organize. Although it requires work upfront, it saves time in the long run: Clothes are easier to find and they stay neater.

Beth Dunphy, president of Custom Closet Designers in Mogadore, Ohio, has these organizing suggestions:

– Make sure the contents are visible, so you can see what clothes are available. The closet also should be flexible to adapt as your wardrobe changes.

– Group clothing by length to gain usable floor space. Clothes can also be separated by type, such as casual, dress and out-of-season.

– Install a small rod in your closet just for storing empty hangers. It saves searching when you need one.

– Get rid of items you don’t wear.
