An Oak Lawn man was ordered held on $175,000 bond Tuesday, three days after he allegedly struck and critically injured an off-duty Chicago fire lieutenant in an alcohol-related crash.
Thomas Plant, 24, of the 4000 block of West 99th Street, has been charged with aggravated driving under the influence after injuring Tom Welch, 50, early Saturday morning. Assistant State’s Atty. John Somerville alleged Plant was intoxicated when the sport-utility vehicle he was driving sideswiped Welch as he was getting into his pickup truck, which was parked in the 3600 block of West 111th Street.
Plant was arrested after his vehicle plowed into a light pole a few blocks away, prosecutors said.
Somerville told Judge Colleen Hyland that Plant has given a videotaped statement admitting he drank about two dozen beers before he got into his vehicle.
Authorities said Welch remained on life support late Tuesday.
