A woman who allegedly fled from a car accident that killed a pedestrian was detained Sunday by Far Northwest Side motorists who turned her over to police, authorities said.

The woman’s sport-utility vehicle veered onto a sidewalk in the 6400 block of North Harlem Avenue around 6:25 p.m., police said.

The woman, who had two children with her, struck two people waiting at a bus stop and continued driving, police said. Other motorists stopped the driver about a block from the accident, police said.

A 49-year-old man from the Northwest Side was pronounced dead at the scene, a Cook County medical examiner’s spokesman said.

The other victim, a woman, was taken to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.
