In recent discussions about motorcyclists’ disinclination to wear helmets and car drivers not wearing seat belts, much has been made about how government is interfering with citizens’ rights to use free will and adult judgment about personal safety.
Nowhere have I seen the obvious counter argument: So long as people with preventable injuries accept insurance payments or government medical or disability aid, then this is a societal issue rather than a personal one.
Hey, you want to risk living your life drooling on yourself in a nursing home after a severe head trauma, that’s your business. Just don’t ask me to subsidize it.
