If you don’t hear of newcomer Lizz Wright this year, it won’t be for lack of exposure. The striking, rich-voiced contralto from Georgia has been making the rounds of numerous jazz festivals; her music draws on influences ranging from jazz to pop to soul; she’s recording for a major jazz label, and she has a respected veteran co-producer (Tommy LiPuma) to shape an accessible, pristine sound. Wright has drawn comparisons to many, including Billie Holiday, Norah Jones, Dianne Reeves and Nina Simone, but we hear a promising original artist who has her own vibe going.
