Chicago tops list for best tap water
Of the 19 cities reviewed, Chicago was singled out for its tap water in a study by the Natural Resources Defense Council.
In the survey results released Wednesday, Chicago was the only city earning an “excellent” rating for water quality and compliance with regulations in 2001. Other cities’ water rates:
Detroit: Good
New Orleans: Good
Newark: Fair
San Diego: Fair
San Francisco: Poor
Washington, D.C.: Fair
STUDENT HAD PLANNED TO ATTACK SCHOOL: A 5th grader who committed suicide in a school restroom in Wellsboro, Pa., last week had planned an assault on the school but killed himself after his friends wouldn’t go along with the plan, police said.
The 12-year-old had fantasized openly for months about “taking over the school,” but his friends didn’t take him seriously, the local police chief said Tuesday.
NO MORE NIGHT LAUNCHES: The space shuttle in the future will only be launched in daylight, under the scrutiny of powerful cameras, and astronauts may be trained for spacewalking inspections if engineers suspect the heat shield was damaged during launch, NASA administrator Sean O’Keefe said in Washington on Wednesday.
ON THE SIDE: In 2002, Sen. Orrin Hatch (R.-Utah), the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, took in $18,009 from moonlighting as a songwriter, according to his latest Senate financial disclosure. He has written songs dedicated to Muhammad Ali, Massachusetts Sen. Edward Kennedy, the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks, and his wife, Elaine. His most recent work appears on “I Love America,” a series of patriotic songs recorded by the children of one of the original Osmond Brothers.
