In a surprise move, Nissan says it will add production of its Pathfinder sport-utility vehicle to its Smyrna, Tenn., plant for the ’05 model. In doing so it will boost plant capacity by 50,000 units, to 550,000 vehicles annually. The SUV is now built in Japan. Smyrna builds the Altima and Maxima cars off one platform, the Xterra SUV and Frontier pickup off another. Nissan won’t say on which platform its new-for-’05 Pathfinder would be based.
