Next winter, residents or contractors who dump snow onto city streets, street shoulders, sidewalks or private property they don’t own could be fined.

Concerned about incidents of individuals and snow-removal contractors blocking streets and sidewalks with snow, the Village Board passed an ordinance this week making such actions illegal. The ordinance also prohibits dumping snow in front of a fire hydrant.

Violators could be issued a $25 ticket that increases to $50 after seven days, and contractors could be issued a $50 ticket that increases to $75 after seven days, Police Chief Dennis Schmidt said.

Schmidt said improper snow-dumping incidents have been isolated, but village officials were concerned it would become a bigger problem as the village continues to grow. He added that he hoped a public information campaign about the new ordinance, rather than enforcement, would solve the problem.
