The Toronto Blue Jays and SkyDome took steps Tuesday to comply with Ontario’s request for reduced power consumption.
Ontario Premier Ernie Eves and others have pleaded for everyone to conserve power to avoid overloading a system that is still recovering from last week’s huge blackout.
SkyDome’s Jumbotron, which is normally activated at 5 p.m., wasn’t turned on until 6:45 p.m. and plans were to turn it off immediately after the game.
The Blue Jays also didn’t use air conditioning in SkyDome’s seating area. The roof opened earlier than usual to allow for cooling in the seating area.
The use of in-stadium lights was also minimized and many elevators were shut down.
The Blue Jays said the measures could remain in place for their seven-game homestand.
Cirillo wants job back
The Mariners activated third baseman Jeff Cirillo, on the DL since July 24 with a partially dislocated right shoulder. He also strained a muscle on the left side of his back during a rehabilitation assignment at Triple-A Tacoma last week.
Cirillo, 33, is hitting just .210 with two homers and 22 RBIs in 76 games this season. He lost his job earlier this season and didn’t start Tuesday’s game against Toronto.
“I’m here to regain my spot,” he said. Willie Bloomquist started at third on Tuesday. Manager Bob Melvin told Cirillo he would start on Wednesday.
Devil Rays claim Piatt
The Devil Rays claimed outfielder Adam Piatt off waivers from Oakland. Piatt, who was designated for assignment by the A’s on Aug. 13, hit .240 with four homers and 15 RBIs in 47 games.
