The reason adoption laws were so secretive is that it was preferable to people burying their mistakes. Anonymity guaranteed that babies wouldn’t be abandoned or that an illegal abortion (or, later, legal abortion) wasn’t gotten, or at least not as often. I hope adoption advocates realize their agenda of overturning secrecy might have repercussions on future fetuses.
