On a beautiful September day, more than 23,000 Americans were killed, wounded or missing following an attack on American soil. Of that 23,000, more than 4,000 Americans were killed outright; many more died later from their injuries. The day was Sept. 17, 1862, on a field in Maryland called Antietam. I urge Americans to give these men a minute of their time in silent tribute.
