In his Sept. 19 letter to the editor, Philip Smithback states that the age requirements for drinking in this country are ridiculous and that we need to teach kids to drink responsibly at a young age. Although I agree with his point that kids need to be taught to drink responsibly, I think that there is another point that should be made. We need to recognize that underage drinking is a problem and that is cannot be fixed by all parents. If parents alone cannot stop underage drinking and drinking laws can reduce it, then these laws need to stay in place.
