Although I am white, I enjoyed Leonard Pitts’ column on affirmative action and white males (“Affirmative action’s big winners: white males,” Commentary, Oct. 21). For the past few years, as I learned more and more about history, I have begun to think that God must be a man with a sense of humor; how else could men have dominated society with the incompetent fools they seem to produce?

Now it seems I have to add “white” to my description of God. I don’t mean to portray all males as idiots, nor do I believe that; it simply seems that many of the leaders we read about in history repeatedly make ill-advised mistakes and yet retain their positions of power.
