UNESCO has awarded a German company a contract to preserve the world-famous but decaying Moai giant head sculptures on Easter Island.

Stefan Maar, founder of Berlin-based Maar Denkmalpflege GmbH, said Tuesday that his company plans to begin treating the statues with chemicals in early 2005 in a project estimated to cost $11.5 million.

The Moai statues–battered by weather, tourism and past restoration attempts–are between 400 and 1,000 years old.
