A judge on Tuesday set a hearing for Feb. 17 on whether avant-garde theater director Gerald Thomas will face indecent exposure charges for mooning the audience at an opera.
After a performance in August of Richard Wagner’s “Tristan und Isolde” at Rio de Janeiro’s municipal theater, Thomas shocked the audience and much of the cast by taking down his pants in response to jeers during the curtain call.
Thomas, who is Jewish, claims his mooning was in response to anti-Semitic catcalls. He apologized on a nationally televised talk show, but prosecutors insist he be charged.
